Valley Boulevard is lined with restaurants, bakeries and tea shops for several miles. A HEYTEA here is competing against long-established local operators rather than against other chains.
The store rounds out a San Gabriel Valley trio with Monterey Park and Rowland Heights, all within a short drive of each other.
Of the three, Rowland Heights rates highest at 4.8 stars. San Gabriel is too new to compare on that basis yet.
Parking follows the usual Valley Boulevard pattern, which means a plaza lot that fills at weekend meal times and is otherwise fine.
A new store in a knowledgeable market is worth testing with something plain. Jasmine Tea at $5.49 is a brewed tea with nothing in it and shows the leaf directly.
For a comparison against the shops around it, Longjing Milk Tea at $8.49 uses a pan-fired green tea that is familiar in this neighbourhood and rare on most American tea menus.
The Tea Lab range is the other reason to visit a street-level store rather than a mall counter, since it is where the sourcing shows and the counters do not always carry it.
Weekend evenings on Valley Boulevard are the peak window. A weekday visit gets a shorter queue, which matters for anything with a cap on it.
